This is a story about a cricket match. But it is also a story about a father watching his son play for the first time, about a boy learning that failure is not the opposite of grace, and about the long afternoon light that falls across an oval field and makes everything look, briefly, sacred.

The game lasted forty-two overs. The story lasted longer.
